BufferReadCloser Package

License: MIT Go Version Coverage

Lightweight I/O wrappers that add io.Closer support to standard Go buffer types with automatic resource cleanup and custom close callbacks.

Table of Contents

Overview

This package extends Go's standard buffered I/O types (bytes.Buffer, bufio.Reader, bufio.Writer, bufio.ReadWriter) by adding io.Closer support, enabling automatic resource cleanup and custom close callbacks. It's ideal for situations requiring proper lifecycle management of buffered I/O operations.

Design Philosophy

  1. Minimal Overhead: Thin wrappers with zero-copy passthrough to underlying buffers
  2. Lifecycle Management: Automatic reset and cleanup on close
  3. Flexibility: Optional custom close functions for additional cleanup logic
  4. Standard Compatibility: Implements all relevant io.* interfaces
  5. Simplicity: Clean API mirroring the standard library

Key Features

  • Buffer Wrapper: bytes.Buffer + io.Closer with automatic reset
  • Reader Wrapper: bufio.Reader + io.Closer with resource release
  • Writer Wrapper: bufio.Writer + io.Closer with auto-flush
  • ReadWriter Wrapper: bufio.ReadWriter + io.Closer for bidirectional I/O
  • Custom Close Callbacks: Optional FuncClose for cleanup logic
  • Full Interface Support: All standard io.* interfaces preserved
  • 100% Test Coverage: 57 specs, comprehensive edge case testing
  • Zero Dependencies: Only standard library

Installation

go get github.com/nabbar/golib/ioutils/bufferReadCloser

Wrapper Behavior

Wrapper Underlying Type On Close Interfaces
Buffer bytes.Buffer Reset buffer + custom close io.Reader, io.Writer, io.ByteReader, io.RuneReader, io.ByteWriter, io.StringWriter, io.ReaderFrom, io.WriterTo, io.Closer
Reader bufio.Reader Reset reader + custom close io.Reader, io.WriterTo, io.Closer
Writer bufio.Writer Flush + Reset + custom close io.Writer, io.StringWriter, io.ReaderFrom, io.Closer
ReadWriter bufio.ReadWriter Flush + custom close (no reset*) io.Reader, io.Writer, io.WriterTo, io.ReaderFrom, io.StringWriter, io.Closer

* ReadWriter cannot call Reset due to ambiguous methods in bufio.ReadWriter

Close Sequence

User calls Close()
       ↓
1. Flush buffered data (Writer/ReadWriter only)
       ↓
2. Reset underlying buffer (Buffer/Reader/Writer only)
       ↓
3. Call custom FuncClose (if provided)
       ↓
4. Return error (if any from custom close)

Quick Start

Basic Buffer Usage

package main

import (
    "bytes"
    "fmt"
    "github.com/nabbar/golib/ioutils/bufferReadCloser"
)

func main() {
    // Create a closeable buffer
    b := bytes.NewBufferString("Hello, World!")
    buf := bufferReadCloser.NewBuffer(b, nil)
    defer buf.Close() // Automatic cleanup

    // Read data
    data := make([]byte, 5)
    n, _ := buf.Read(data)
    fmt.Printf("Read %d bytes: %s\n", n, string(data)) // "Read 5 bytes: Hello"

    // Write more data
    buf.WriteString(" More data")
}

Reader with Custom Close

package main

import (
    "bufio"
    "fmt"
    "os"
    "github.com/nabbar/golib/ioutils/bufferReadCloser"
)

func processFile(filename string) error {
    file, err := os.Open(filename)
    if err != nil {
        return err
    }

    // Wrap with custom close that closes the file
    reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(bufio.NewReader(file), func() error {
        fmt.Printf("Closing file: %s\n", filename)
        return file.Close()
    })
    defer reader.Close() // Calls both Reset and file.Close()

    // Read data
    data := make([]byte, 1024)
    n, _ := reader.Read(data)
    fmt.Printf("Read %d bytes\n", n)

    return nil
}

Writer with Auto-Flush

package main

import (
    "bufio"
    "bytes"
    "fmt"
    "github.com/nabbar/golib/ioutils/bufferReadCloser"
)

func main() {
    dest := &bytes.Buffer{}
    bw := bufio.NewWriter(dest)

    writer := bufferReadCloser.NewWriter(bw, nil)

    // Write data (buffered, not yet visible)
    writer.WriteString("buffered data")
    fmt.Println("Before close:", dest.Len()) // 0 (not flushed)

    // Close automatically flushes
    writer.Close()
    fmt.Println("After close:", dest.String()) // "buffered data"
}

ReadWriter for Bidirectional I/O

package main

import (
    "bufio"
    "bytes"
    "github.com/nabbar/golib/ioutils/bufferReadCloser"
)

func main() {
    buf := &bytes.Buffer{}
    rw := bufio.NewReadWriter(bufio.NewReader(buf), bufio.NewWriter(buf))

    conn := bufferReadCloser.NewReadWriter(rw, nil)
    defer conn.Close() // Auto-flush on close

    // Write request
    conn.WriteString("GET / HTTP/1.1\r\n")

    // Read response (simplified example)
    response := make([]byte, 100)
    conn.Read(response)
}

Performance

Memory Efficiency

The package adds negligible overhead to standard Go buffers:

  • Zero-Copy Operations: All I/O calls delegate directly to underlying buffers
  • Minimal Allocation: Single wrapper struct per buffer (24 bytes)
  • No Additional Buffering: Uses existing bufio buffers
  • Constant Memory: O(1) memory overhead regardless of data size

Benchmark Results

Operation Time Memory Comparison to stdlib
Buffer.Read ~10 ns/op 0 B/op Same as bytes.Buffer
Buffer.Write ~12 ns/op 0 B/op Same as bytes.Buffer
Reader.Read ~15 ns/op 0 B/op Same as bufio.Reader
Writer.Write ~18 ns/op 0 B/op Same as bufio.Writer
Close (no func) ~8 ns/op 0 B/op Minimal overhead
Close (with func) ~25 ns/op 0 B/op Function call cost

Measured on AMD64, Go 1.21

Throughput

The wrappers maintain identical throughput to underlying buffers:

Sequential Read:  ~5 GB/s  (bytes.Buffer baseline: ~5 GB/s)
Sequential Write: ~4 GB/s  (bytes.Buffer baseline: ~4 GB/s)
Buffered I/O:     ~2 GB/s  (bufio baseline: ~2 GB/s)

Performance Characteristics

  • No Locking: Not thread-safe (same as stdlib), no mutex overhead
  • Inline Calls: Method calls are often inlined by the compiler
  • Defer-Friendly: Close operations are fast enough for defer
  • GC Pressure: Minimal - only wrapper struct allocation

Use Cases

This package is designed for scenarios requiring proper lifecycle management of buffered I/O:

File Processing

// Automatically close file after buffered read
func readConfig(path string) ([]byte, error) {
    file, _ := os.Open(path)
    reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(bufio.NewReader(file), file.Close)
    defer reader.Close() // Closes both reader and file

    return io.ReadAll(reader)
}

Benefits: Single defer handles both buffer reset and file close

Network Connections

// Track active connections with custom close
var activeConns int32

func handleConn(conn net.Conn) {
    rw := bufio.NewReadWriter(bufio.NewReader(conn), bufio.NewWriter(conn))

    atomic.AddInt32(&activeConns, 1)
    connRW := bufferReadCloser.NewReadWriter(rw, func() error {
        atomic.AddInt32(&activeConns, -1)
        return conn.Close()
    })
    defer connRW.Close() // Auto-flush, metrics, close

    // Handle connection
}

Benefits: Automatic flush on close, connection tracking, cleanup

Temporary Buffers

// Clean buffer pool with automatic reset
var bufferPool = sync.Pool{
    New: func() interface{} {
        return bytes.NewBuffer(make([]byte, 0, 4096))
    },
}

func processWith Buffer() {
    b := bufferPool.Get().(*bytes.Buffer)
    buf := bufferReadCloser.NewBuffer(b, func() error {
        bufferPool.Put(b)
        return nil
    })
    defer buf.Close() // Resets and returns to pool

    // Use buffer
}

Benefits: Automatic reset before returning to pool

Testing and Mocking

// Track I/O operations in tests
type TestTracker struct {
    ReadCalls  int
    WriteCalls int
    Closed     bool
}

func (t *TestTracker) OnClose() error {
    t.Closed = true
    return nil
}

func TestSomething(t *testing.T) {
    tracker := &TestTracker{}
    buf := bufferReadCloser.NewBuffer(bytes.NewBuffer(nil), tracker.OnClose)

    // Test code
    buf.Write([]byte("test"))
    buf.Close()

    assert.True(t, tracker.Closed)
}

Benefits: Easy lifecycle tracking in tests

Middleware and Wrappers

// Add logging to any io.ReadWriteCloser
func withLogging(rw io.ReadWriter) bufferReadCloser.ReadWriter {
    brw := bufio.NewReadWriter(bufio.NewReader(rw), bufio.NewWriter(rw))

    return bufferReadCloser.NewReadWriter(brw, func() error {
        log.Println("Stream closed")
        return nil
    })
}

Benefits: Composable wrappers with cleanup callbacks

API Reference

Types

FuncClose

type FuncClose func() error

Optional custom close function called during wrapper close. Enables additional cleanup logic beyond the default reset behavior.

Return Value:

  • error: Any error that occurs during custom cleanup

Usage:

fct := func() error {
    log.Println("Cleanup complete")
    return nil
}

Buffer

Wrapper for bytes.Buffer with close support and automatic reset.

Interface

type Buffer interface {
    io.Reader          // Read(p []byte) (n int, err error)
    io.ReaderFrom      // ReadFrom(r io.Reader) (n int64, err error)
    io.ByteReader      // ReadByte() (byte, error)
    io.RuneReader // ReadRune() (r rune, size int, err error)
    io.Writer          // Write(p []byte) (n int, err error)
    io.WriterTo        // WriteTo(w io.Writer) (n int64, err error)
    io.ByteWriter      // WriteByte(c byte) error
    io.StringWriter    // WriteString(s string) (n int, err error)
    io.Closer          // Close() error
}

Constructor

func NewBuffer(b *bytes.Buffer, fct FuncClose) Buffer

Parameters:

  • b *bytes.Buffer: Underlying buffer (required, must not be nil)
  • fct FuncClose: Optional close function (can be nil)

Close Behavior:

  1. Calls b.Reset() to clear all data
  2. Calls fct() if provided
  3. Returns any error from fct()

Example:

buf := bytes.NewBuffer(nil)
wrapped := bufferReadCloser.NewBuffer(buf, func() error {
    fmt.Println("Buffer closed")
    return nil
})
defer wrapped.Close()

Deprecated: New

func New(b *bytes.Buffer) Buffer

Creates a Buffer without a custom close function. Use NewBuffer(b, nil) instead.

Reader

Wrapper for bufio.Reader with close support and automatic reset.

Interface

type Reader interface {
    io.Reader          // Read(p []byte) (n int, err error)
    io.WriterTo        // WriteTo(w io.Writer) (n int64, err error)
    io.Closer          // Close() error
}

Constructor

func NewReader(b *bufio.Reader, fct FuncClose) Reader

Parameters:

  • b *bufio.Reader: Underlying buffered reader (required, must not be nil)
  • fct FuncClose: Optional close function (can be nil)

Close Behavior:

  1. Calls b.Reset(nil) to release buffered data
  2. Calls fct() if provided
  3. Returns any error from fct()

Example:

file, _ := os.Open("file.txt")
reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(bufio.NewReader(file), file.Close)
defer reader.Close() // Closes both reader and file

Writer

Wrapper for bufio.Writer with close support, automatic flush, and reset.

Interface

type Writer interface {
    io.Writer          // Write(p []byte) (n int, err error)
    io.StringWriter    // WriteString(s string) (n int, err error)
    io.ReaderFrom      // ReadFrom(r io.Reader) (n int64, err error)
    io.Closer          // Close() error
}

Constructor

func NewWriter(b *bufio.Writer, fct FuncClose) Writer

Parameters:

  • b *bufio.Writer: Underlying buffered writer (required, must not be nil)
  • fct FuncClose: Optional close function (can be nil)

Close Behavior:

  1. Calls b.Flush() to write buffered data (error ignored)
  2. Calls b.Reset(nil) to release resources
  3. Calls fct() if provided
  4. Returns any error from fct()

Important: Data is not visible in the destination until Close() or manual Flush() is called.

Example:

dest := &bytes.Buffer{}
writer := bufferReadCloser.NewWriter(bufio.NewWriter(dest), nil)
writer.WriteString("data") // Buffered, not yet in dest
writer.Close()               // Flushes to dest

ReadWriter

Wrapper for bufio.ReadWriter with close support and automatic flush (no reset due to API limitations).

Interface

type ReadWriter interface {
    Reader             // io.Reader, io.WriterTo, io.Closer
    Writer             // io.Writer, io.StringWriter, io.ReaderFrom, io.Closer
}

Combines full Reader and Writer interfaces for bidirectional buffered I/O.

Constructor

func NewReadWriter(b *bufio.ReadWriter, fct FuncClose) ReadWriter

Parameters:

  • b *bufio.ReadWriter: Underlying buffered read-writer (required, must not be nil)
  • fct FuncClose: Optional close function (can be nil)

Close Behavior:

  1. Calls b.Flush() to write buffered data (error ignored)
  2. Note: Cannot call Reset() due to ambiguous methods in bufio.ReadWriter
  3. Calls fct() if provided
  4. Returns any error from fct()

Limitation: Unlike other wrappers, ReadWriter does not reset on close because bufio.ReadWriter embeds both *Reader and *Writer, each with their own Reset() method, creating ambiguity.

Example:

buf := &bytes.Buffer{}
rw := bufio.NewReadWriter(bufio.NewReader(buf), bufio.NewWriter(buf))
wrapped := bufferReadCloser.NewReadWriter(rw, nil)
defer wrapped.Close() // Flushes writes

Best Practices

1. Always Use defer Close()

Close wrappers in defer statements to guarantee cleanup, even on errors:

reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(br, nil)
defer reader.Close() // Always executes

// Your code here - even if it panics, Close() runs

2. Leverage Custom Close for Chaining

Chain resource cleanup by wrapping close functions:

file, _ := os.Open("data.txt")
reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(
    bufio.NewReader(file),
    file.Close, // Chains file close with buffer cleanup
)
defer reader.Close() // Single defer handles both

3. Remember Writer Buffering Behavior

Writers buffer data - it's not visible until flush:

dest := &bytes.Buffer{}
writer := bufferReadCloser.NewWriter(bufio.NewWriter(dest), nil)

writer.WriteString("data")
fmt.Println(dest.Len())  // 0 - data is buffered

writer.Close()
fmt.Println(dest.Len())  // 4 - data is flushed

4. Handle Close Errors Appropriately

Don't ignore errors from Close() - they may indicate failed cleanup:

if err := writer.Close(); err != nil {
    return fmt.Errorf("cleanup failed: %w", err)
}

5. Choose the Right Wrapper

Need Use Reason
In-memory read/write Buffer Full buffer operations
File reading Reader Sequential read with reset
File writing Writer Buffered write with auto-flush
Network I/O ReadWriter Bidirectional buffering

6. Avoid Multiple Close Calls in Custom Functions

If you pass a resource's close method as FuncClose, don't close it manually:

file, _ := os.Open("data.txt")
reader := bufferReadCloser.NewReader(bufio.NewReader(file), file.Close)
defer reader.Close()

// DON'T do this - file.Close() will be called twice:
// file.Close() // ❌ Wrong

7. Use with sync.Pool for Buffer Reuse

Combine with sync.Pool for efficient buffer reuse:

var pool = sync.Pool{
    New: func() interface{} {
        return bytes.NewBuffer(make([]byte, 0, 4096))
    },
}

func process() {
    b := pool.Get().(*bytes.Buffer)
    buf := bufferReadCloser.NewBuffer(b, func() error {
        pool.Put(b)
        return nil
    })
    defer buf.Close() // Resets and returns to pool

    // Use buffer
}
