Test Categories

1. Unit Tests

Test individual functions and methods in isolation.

Example: construction_test.go

Describe("New without progress", func() {
    It("should create a semaphore without MPB", func() {
        sem := libsem.New(ctx, 5, false)
        defer sem.DeferMain()

        Expect(sem).ToNot(BeNil())
        Expect(sem.Weighted()).To(Equal(int64(5)))
    })
})

Coverage: Tests all public functions with various inputs.

2. Integration Tests

Test interactions between components.

Example: integration_test.go

It("should handle batch processing workflow", func() {
    sem := libsem.New(ctx, 5, true)
    defer sem.DeferMain()

    bar := sem.BarNumber("Tasks", "processing", 100, false, nil)

    // Process 100 tasks with 5 concurrent workers
    for i := 0; i < 100; i++ {
        go func() {
            if err := bar.NewWorker(); err == nil {
                defer bar.DeferWorker()
                // Simulate work
            }
        }()
    }

    bar.WaitAll()
})

Coverage: Tests real-world usage patterns and component interactions.

3. Concurrency Tests

Test thread safety and race conditions.

Example: Race detection tests

It("should handle many concurrent workers", func() {
    sem := libsem.New(ctx, 10, false)
    defer sem.DeferMain()

    var wg sync.WaitGroup
    var completed atomic.Int32

    // Launch 100 concurrent goroutines
    for i := 0; i < 100; i++ {
        wg.Add(1)
        go func() {
            defer wg.Done()
            if err := sem.NewWorker(); err == nil {
                defer sem.DeferWorker()
                completed.Add(1)
            }
        }()
    }

    wg.Wait()
    Expect(completed.Load()).To(Equal(int32(100)))
})

Coverage: Tests with up to 1000 concurrent goroutines.

Race Detection: Specific race_test.go file tests concurrent operations under race detector.

// Example: Testing mixed Inc/Dec with race detector
It("should not have race conditions with mixed Inc/Dec calls", func() {
    sem := createTestSemaphoreWithProgress(globalCtx, 50)
    bar := libbar.New(sem, 5000, false)

    var wg sync.WaitGroup

    // 25 goroutines incrementing
    for i := 0; i < 25; i++ {
        wg.Add(1)
        go func() {
            defer wg.Done()
            for j := 0; j < 50; j++ {
                bar.Inc64(10)
                time.Sleep(time.Microsecond)
            }
        }()
    }

    // 25 goroutines decrementing
    for i := 0; i < 25; i++ {
        wg.Add(1)
        go func() {
            defer wg.Done()
            for j := 0; j < 50; j++ {
                bar.Dec64(10)
                time.Sleep(time.Microsecond)
            }
        }()
    }

    wg.Wait()
    Expect(bar.Total()).To(Equal(int64(5000)))
})

4. Edge Cases & Boundary Tests

Test unusual or extreme conditions.

Example: edge_cases_test.go

Describe("Boundary conditions", func() {
    It("should handle maximum int64 total", func() {
        sem := libsem.New(ctx, 5, false)
        bar := libbar.New(sem, math.MaxInt64, false)

        Expect(bar.Total()).To(Equal(int64(math.MaxInt64)))
    })

    It("should handle zero workers limit", func() {
        sem := libsem.New(ctx, 0, false)
        // Should use MaxSimultaneous
        Expect(sem.Weighted()).To(BeNumerically(">", 0))
    })
})

5. Context Tests

Test context integration and cancellation.

Example: context_test.go

Describe("Context interface", func() {
    It("should respect timeout", func() {
        localCtx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(ctx, 100*time.Millisecond)
        defer cancel()

        sem := libsem.New(localCtx, 5, false)
        defer sem.DeferMain()

        Eventually(sem.Done()).Should(BeClosed())
        Expect(sem.Err()).To(Equal(context.DeadlineExceeded))
    })
})

Test Patterns

Setup and Teardown

var _ = Describe("Test Suite", func() {
    var (
        ctx    context.Context
        cancel context.CancelFunc
    )

    BeforeEach(func() {
        // Setup before each test
        ctx, cancel = context.WithTimeout(globalCtx, 5*time.Second)
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        // Cleanup after each test
        if cancel != nil {
            cancel()
        }
    })
})

Helper Functions

// Helper to create test semaphore
func createTestSemaphore(ctx context.Context, n int) semtps.SemPgb {
    sem := libsem.New(ctx, n, false)
    Expect(sem).ToNot(BeNil())

    semPgb, ok := sem.(semtps.SemPgb)
    Expect(ok).To(BeTrue())
    return semPgb
}

Async Testing

It("should complete asynchronously", func() {
    done := make(chan bool, 1)

    go func() {
        defer sem.DeferWorker()
        // Do work
        done <- true
    }()

    Eventually(done, time.Second).Should(Receive(BeTrue()))
})

Timing Tests

It("should not block when slots available", func() {
    start := time.Now()

    Expect(sem.NewWorkerTry()).To(BeTrue())

    duration := time.Since(start)
    Expect(duration).To(BeNumerically("<", 10*time.Millisecond))
})

Race Detection

All tests pass with race detection enabled:

$ CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./...
ok      github.com/nabbar/golib/semaphore       1.370s
ok      github.com/nabbar/golib/semaphore/bar   2.092s
ok      github.com/nabbar/golib/semaphore/sem   2.498s

Zero race conditions detected across all packages.

Race Detection Tests

The bar package includes specific tests (race_test.go) designed to stress-test thread safety:

It("should not have race conditions with concurrent Inc calls", func() {
    sem := createTestSemaphoreWithProgress(globalCtx, 50)
    bar := libbar.New(sem, 10000, false)

    var wg sync.WaitGroup
    const goroutines = 100
    const incrementsPerGoroutine = 100

    // Launch many concurrent goroutines calling Inc
    for i := 0; i < goroutines; i++ {
        wg.Add(1)
        go func() {
            defer wg.Done()
            for j := 0; j < incrementsPerGoroutine; j++ {
                bar.Inc(1)
                time.Sleep(time.Microsecond)
            }
        }()
    }

    wg.Wait()
})

These tests specifically verify:

  • Concurrent Inc() calls from 100+ goroutines
  • Mixed Inc64() and Dec64() operations
  • Concurrent reads (Current(), Total(), Completed()) and writes

Thread Safety Implementation

The package achieves thread safety through:

  • Atomic operations: All counter updates use atomic.Int64 operations
  • Atomic swap: Timestamp tracking uses atomic.Int64.Swap() for atomic read-modify-write
  • Semaphore primitives: Built on Go's golang.org/x/sync/semaphore.Weighted

Key implementation detail in bar/model.go:

func (o *bar) getDur() time.Duration {
    now := time.Now().UnixNano()
    prev := o.t.Swap(now)  // Atomic read-modify-write

    if prev == 0 {
        return time.Millisecond
    }

    dur := time.Duration(now - prev)
    if dur <= 0 {
        return time.Millisecond
    }

    return dur
}

The Swap() operation atomically reads the previous value and stores the new value in a single operation, preventing race conditions that could occur with separate Load() and Store() calls.

Performance Benchmarks

Throughput

Weighted Semaphore (10 workers):
  - 1000 tasks: ~50ms
  - 10000 tasks: ~500ms
  - Throughput: ~20,000 tasks/second

  - 1000 tasks: ~30ms
  - 10000 tasks: ~300ms
  - Throughput: ~33,000 tasks/second

Latency

Worker Acquisition:
  - NewWorker (available): <100µs
  - NewWorker (waiting): ~1ms average
  - NewWorkerTry: <50µs

Progress Updates:
  - Inc/Dec operations: <10µs
  - Bar completion: <1ms

Memory

Per Semaphore:
  - Without progress: ~48 bytes
  - With progress: ~128 bytes + MPB overhead

Per Worker Slot:
  - Weighted: ~40 bytes
  - WaitGroup: ~24 bytes

Test Failures Debugging

Common Issues

1. Timeout Errors

Expected context not to timeout

Solution: Increase timeout or reduce test workload

ctx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(globalCtx, 10*time.Second) // Increase from 5s

2. Race Conditions

WARNING: DATA RACE

Solution: Check for proper synchronization

// Use atomic operations
var counter atomic.Int32
counter.Add(1)

// Or use mutex
var mu sync.Mutex
mu.Lock()
defer mu.Unlock()

3. Goroutine Leaks

Test never completes

Solution: Ensure all goroutines clean up

defer sem.DeferWorker() // Always defer
defer bar.DeferMain()   // Cleanup resources

Writing New Tests

Test Structure

package mypackage_test

import (
    "context"
    "testing"
    "time"

    . "github.com/onsi/ginkgo/v2"
    . "github.com/onsi/gomega"
)

func TestMyPackage(t *testing.T) {
    RegisterFailHandler(Fail)
    RunSpecs(t, "My Package Suite")
}

var _ = Describe("Feature Name", func() {
    var (
        ctx    context.Context
        cancel context.CancelFunc
    )

    BeforeEach(func() {
        ctx, cancel = context.WithTimeout(context.Background(), 5*time.Second)
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        if cancel != nil {
            cancel()
        }
    })

    Describe("Functionality", func() {
        It("should do something", func() {
            // Test code
            Expect(result).To(Equal(expected))
        })
    })
})

Best Practices

  1. Use Descriptive Names

    It("should create a semaphore with MPB when progress is true", func() {
        // Clear what this tests
    })

  2. Test One Thing

    // Good
    It("should acquire worker slot", func() {
        Expect(sem.NewWorker()).ToNot(HaveOccurred())
    })

    It("should release worker slot", func() {
        sem.NewWorker()
        sem.DeferWorker() // No panic
    })

    // Bad
    It("should acquire and release worker slot", func() {
        // Testing two things
    })

  3. Use Helpers for Common Setup

    func createTestSem(ctx context.Context) Semaphore {
        sem := semaphore.New(ctx, 5, false)
        Expect(sem).ToNot(BeNil())
        return sem
    }

  4. Clean Up Resources

    It("should cleanup", func() {
        sem := semaphore.New(ctx, 5, true)
        defer sem.DeferMain() // Always cleanup

        // Test code
    })

  5. Test Error Paths

    It("should handle context cancellation", func() {
        localCtx, cancel := context.WithCancel(ctx)
        sem := semaphore.New(localCtx, 1, false)
        defer sem.DeferMain()

        sem.NewWorker() // Fill semaphore
        cancel()        // Cancel context

        // Should fail
        Expect(sem.NewWorker()).To(HaveOccurred())
    })

Test Coverage Goals
