Test Framework

Ginkgo/Gomega

The package uses Ginkgo v2 for test structure and Gomega for assertions.

Why Ginkgo/Gomega?

  • Readable: BDD-style tests are self-documenting
  • Flexible: Supports table-driven tests, nested contexts
  • Powerful: Rich assertion library
  • Parallel: Built-in parallel test execution support

Test Structure

var _ = Describe("Component", func() {
    var (
        mapper htcdns.DNSMapper
        client *http.Client
    )

    BeforeEach(func() {
        // Setup before each test
        cfg := &htcdns.Config{
            DNSMapper: map[string]string{
                "test.local:80": "127.0.0.1:8080",
            },
        }
        mapper = htcdns.New(context.Background(), cfg, nil, nil)
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        // Cleanup after each test
        if mapper != nil {
            mapper.Close()
        }
    })

    Context("when performing operations", func() {
        It("should work correctly", func() {
            Expect(mapper).NotTo(BeNil())
            Expect(mapper.Len()).To(Equal(1))
        })
    })
})

Test Organization Principles

  1. One file per component: Keep test files focused
  2. Logical grouping: Use Describe/Context for organization
  3. Clear naming: Descriptive test names
  4. Isolation: Tests should not depend on each other
  5. Cleanup: Always clean up resources in AfterEach

Integration Testing

Prerequisites for Integration Tests

Integration tests require:

  • Network access
  • Test HTTP server
  • Valid TLS certificates (for HTTPS tests)

Test HTTP Server

// Create test server
func setupTestServer() *httptest.Server {
    handler := http.HandlerFunc(func(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) {
        w.WriteHeader(http.StatusOK)
        w.Write([]byte("OK"))
    })

    return httptest.NewServer(handler)
}

// Test with server
var _ = Describe("Integration Tests", func() {
    var server *httptest.Server

    BeforeEach(func() {
        server = setupTestServer()
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        server.Close()
    })

    It("should connect to test server", func() {
        // Parse server URL
        u, _ := url.Parse(server.URL)

        // Create mapper pointing to test server
        cfg := &htcdns.Config{
            DNSMapper: map[string]string{
                "api.test.com:" + u.Port(): "127.0.0.1:" + u.Port(),
            },
        }

        mapper := htcdns.New(context.Background(), cfg, nil, nil)
        defer mapper.Close()

        httpcli.SetDefaultDNSMapper(mapper)

        // Make request
        client := httpcli.GetClient()
        resp, err := client.Get("http://api.test.com:" + u.Port())

        Expect(err).To(BeNil())
        Expect(resp.StatusCode).To(Equal(http.StatusOK))
        resp.Body.Close()
    })
})

HTTPS Integration Tests

var _ = Describe("HTTPS Integration", func() {
    var server *httptest.Server

    BeforeEach(func() {
        server = httptest.NewTLSServer(http.HandlerFunc(func(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) {
            w.WriteHeader(http.StatusOK)
        }))
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        server.Close()
    })

    It("should connect via HTTPS", func() {
        u, _ := url.Parse(server.URL)

        // Create TLS config that accepts test certificates
        tlsCfg := &libtls.Config{
            // Configure to accept test server cert
        }

        cfg := &htcdns.Config{
            DNSMapper: map[string]string{
                "secure.test.com:" + u.Port(): "127.0.0.1:" + u.Port(),
            },
            Transport: htcdns.TransportConfig{
                TLSConfig: tlsCfg,
            },
        }

        mapper := htcdns.New(context.Background(), cfg, nil, nil)
        defer mapper.Close()

        client := mapper.DefaultClient()
        resp, err := client.Get("https://secure.test.com:" + u.Port())

        Expect(err).To(BeNil())
        Expect(resp.StatusCode).To(Equal(http.StatusOK))
        resp.Body.Close()
    })
})

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

1. Port Conflicts in Tests

Symptom: Tests fail with "address already in use"

Cause: Multiple test suites trying to use the same port

Solution: The test suite now uses dynamic port allocation via GetFreePort():

// ✅ Good: Dynamic port allocation
var (
    addr = fmt.Sprintf("127.0.0.1:%d", GetFreePort())
    srv  = &http.Server{
        Addr:    addr,
        Handler: Hello(),
    }
)

This ensures each test run gets a unique free port, preventing conflicts.

2. Tests Hanging

Symptom: Tests don't complete

Cause: Missing context cancellation or resource cleanup

Solution:

# Use timeout
go test -timeout 30s

# Check for goroutine leaks
go test -race -v

Best Practice: Always use defer for cleanup:

BeforeEach(func() {
    mapper = htcdns.New(ctx, cfg, nil, nil)
})

AfterEach(func() {
    if mapper != nil {
        mapper.Close()  // Always cleanup
    }
})

3. Race Detector Errors

Symptom: Data race warnings

Cause: Concurrent access without synchronization

Solution:

# Enable race detector to find issues
CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race -v

The httpcli package uses atomic operations throughout to prevent race conditions:

  • atomic.Value for DNS mapper storage
  • Thread-safe config management
  • Proper synchronization in concurrent tests

4. TLS Configuration Issues

Symptom: TLS-related errors in custom configurations

Solution: The package now handles nil TLS configs gracefully:

// ✅ Good: Nil TLS config is handled automatically
cfg := &htcdns.Config{
    Transport: htcdns.TransportConfig{
        TLSConfig: nil, // Safe - will use defaults
    },
}

The transport layer automatically creates default TLS configuration when nil is provided.

Debug Logging

// Enable verbose output in tests
BeforeEach(func() {
    GinkgoWriter.Printf("Starting test: %s\n",
                        CurrentSpecReport().FullText())
})

// Add debug prints
It("should work", func() {
    fmt.Fprintf(GinkgoWriter, "Debug: %v\n", someValue)
    // Test code
})

Test Isolation

var _ = Describe("Isolated Tests", func() {
    var (
        mapper  htcdns.DNSMapper
        cleanup func()
    )

    BeforeEach(func() {
        // Setup
        cfg := &htcdns.Config{}
        mapper = htcdns.New(context.Background(), cfg, nil, nil)

        cleanup = func() {
            if mapper != nil {
                mapper.Close()
            }
        }
    })

    AfterEach(func() {
        // Always cleanup
        if cleanup != nil {
            cleanup()
        }
    })
})

Writing New Tests

When adding new functionality:

var _ = Describe("New Feature", func() {
    Context("when condition is met", func() {
        It("should behave as expected", func() {
            // Arrange
            cfg := &htcdns.Config{
                DNSMapper: map[string]string{
                    "test:80": "127.0.0.1:8080",
                },
            }
            mapper := htcdns.New(context.Background(), cfg, nil, nil)
            defer mapper.Close()

            // Act
            result := mapper.Get("test:80")

            // Assert
            Expect(result).To(Equal("127.0.0.1:8080"))
        })
    })

    Context("when error occurs", func() {
        It("should return appropriate error", func() {
            // Test error case
        })
    })
